With Money Talks, you’ll be able to teach your teens about the basics of money:

• how to write a check
• how to balance a checkbook
• how to use ATM and debit cards
• how to pay your bills
• how to set financial goals
• how to use credit cards wisely
• how to save and invest your money — and the power of compounded interest!

Plus, your teens will learn …

• how to open a checking account
• how to pay taxes
• how to avoid identity theft
• how to review a credit report — and how it will affect them when they apply for a job,
rent an apartment, buy car insurance, purchase a new car or a home, and so much more!

You’ve given your teens book smarts …
but do they really have money smarts?

Young adults today are … getting bad grades, dropping out of school, defaulting on student loans, losing jobs and future job opportunities, getting cars repossessed, maxing out an average of 3.5 credit cards, ruining their credit ratings, and filing bankruptcies at record rates.

They’re moving back in with parents again and again — and parents are spending their own retirement funds trying to keep them out of even more financial trouble.

Even worse, though, is the psychological impact of debt on today’s youth. It can result in depression, substance abuse, even suicide.

Are your teens prepared for the real world? Do they know the value of a dollar? Do they think money grows on trees? If you think your teens already know about money, ask them. Most teens are terrified of money … and too scared to ask about it.

Take the credit card quiz below to learn about a typical experience that could easily and quickly happen to your teens. And, if you think $20 is expensive for financial education, try paying credit card interest …

Take this simple credit card quiz with your teens.

1. 19-year-old Joe received a credit card offer in the mail. He doesn’t have a job right now,
but applies for the card anyway. Will he get the card?

 Yes           No

The correct answer is “yes.” Joe doesn’t need a job, an income, or a parent’s signature to get a credit card issued in his name. He only needs to be 18 years old.

2. Joe has made a few payments on his credit card, but is late mailing in his most recent payment. It arrives at the credit card company one day late. His introductory rate was 5%. What will happen to his interest rate?

Stays at 5%           Increases to 18%           Increases to 28%

The correct answer is 28%. If Joe had read the fine print on the application, he would know
that a default rate will jump to 28% — even if his payment is only late one time by one day.

3. Joe charges $3,000 on his credit card for really important stuff, like pizza, gas, a great pair of jeans, a new stereo for his car, clothes for a girl he dated for 3 weeks … (You get the idea … ) At 28%, how long will take Joe to pay off that $3,000 if he only pays the minimum monthly payment?

 3 years           20 years           110 years

Amazingly, it will take Joe 110 years to pay off the original $3,000! He won’t live that long! (And that’s just on one credit card. On average, he’ll receive 8 offers his first semester out of high school. Imagine if he applied for — and received — all 8 cards with a $3,000 credit limit … Think he’ll ever be able to buy a new car, house, vacation, his own children’s college tuition?)

4. If Joe’s minimum monthly payment is $75, how much of his payment will be applied to his principal each month to pay off his credit card debt?

 Less than $5           $25           $50

Less than $5 will be applied to the principal each month — which means that more than $70 of a $75 payment is for interest. Oh, the power of compounded interest! (Now, just think … What if Joe invested that $75 each month instead of paying on credit card debt? The bottom line is that someone will get rich off of Joe’s money: It’ll be credit card companies by charging interest — or Joe by investing in himself and his future.)

5. Any idea how much interest Joe will pay to borrow that $3,000?

 $546          $10,283          $37,162

It will cost Joe almost $37,162 to borrow $3,000! Great deal for credit card companies. Not so great for Joe. (According to Suze Orman, credit card companies are averaging 155% increase in profits each year. Most companies are thrilled if they make a 10% increase. So, is it any wonder young adults are getting bombarded by credit card offers.)

Dear Student Representative:

The statistics are staggering for young adults and the financial trouble they're getting into. For instance, did you know that more students quit college due to credit card debt than to academic failure? For those that do graduate, on average, they owe almost $20,000 in student loans - and another $2,700 to $10,000 in credit card debt - with no guaranteed job upon graduation. Can you imagine being nearly $30,000 in debt at the age of 22?

Did you know that students receive an average of 8 credit card offers their first week of college? No income necessary. With credit card holders aged 18 to 24, nearly 64% don't even know the interest rates they pay on their credit cards (most pay over 18%) - and they only pay the minimum monthly payment.

Here's the really staggering one: Did you know that more young adults file for bankruptcy than graduate from college? Nearly 7% of our nation's personal bankruptcies are filed by 15- to 25-year-olds, an increase of more than 50% for that age group in recent years.

Don't let these be the statistics for your students. Teach them about money before they get into financial trouble. Help them manage the money they'll earn with the education you've given them. Be pro-active ... not reactive!

How do we, as a community, respond and not just point fingers?

We have to teach students about money. It's no longer an option.

Book Sally Taylor's Money Talks! program and
your students will learn...

  • the true costs of using credit cards
  • how to manage their money by balancing their checkbook - and why they can't just call the bank for their balance
  • the power of compounded interest - and how it can work for them by saving - or against them with credit card debt
  • how to set up a simple system to pay bills on time - every time
  • how a $7 pizza can cost $93
  • what it will cost to move out - and stay out!
  • how to avoid ATM fees
  • how to plan for a new car, home, and vacation
  • what they need vs. what they want
  • what their credit report says to bankers, employers, insurance agents, and more
  • how to avoid identity theft
  • how to start building wealth and become a millionaire if they plan right
  • and many more of the absolute must-have skills everyone needs to know, especially young adults just starting out.

And, because I know you are an excellent money manager, you'll want to book your Money Talks! program by February 1, 2007. If you book now, I'll provide a second class FREE on the same day. That's too good a deal to pass up!

She says, “If you think a friend might be suicidal, don’t worry about your friend being mad at you.
