Dear
Friend,
Young adults
today are … getting bad
grades, dropping out of school, defaulting on
student loans, losing jobs and future job opportunities,
getting cars repossessed, ruining their credit
ratings, and filing bankruptcies at records rates.
They’re moving back in with parents again
and again – and parents are spending their
own retirement funds trying to bail them out.
Even worse than that, though, is the psychological
impact of debt on today’s youth. It can
result in depression, substance abuse, and suicide.
We
have to teach them how to handle money …
It’s
no longer an option …
Ralph
Waldo Emerson said,“Money
is of no value; it cannot spend itself. All
depends on the skill of the spender.”
This has never been as true as it is today.

Here’s
what teens are saying about the Money
Talks! course …
“The class was very cool. It makes you
think more about when you spend money and how
to use it. [Sally Taylor]
showed me a little about the world and how hard
it can be – or
how easy it can be. I’m going
to be smart with my money.”
— Michael,
age 17
“Money Talks! is awesome. [Sally
Taylor] showed me … how over-confident
I was [about money].”
— Brian, high school senior
“Sally
[Taylor] was very inspirational and taught
me that I have something to offer in this world. I
know that I am only one person out of all those
students, but I believe if you can change the
way one person thinks about themselves, then
maybe you did something right.”
— Brooke, high school senior
“… the class
was great! I learned a lot of stuff
about money.”
— Jose,
age 17
“… very informative
course. I wish my friends
would have seen it!”
— Jessica,

“I’m
encouraged not to
get a credit card now! I learned how
important your credit rating is, information
about check-writing, balancing a checkbook,
and bill paying. It was very helpful.”
— Brendon, age 16
“… the class
will help me in the future with paying bills
and learning how to make money on my own. This
class also taught me a lot of things about money
that I never knew and nobody would have told
me. Thank you for the experience.”
— Cynthia,
age 17½
“I
learned the most from the investment section.”
— Ean, age 17
“I really liked the class. There were a
lot of basic things I knew, but some I didn’t, which
turned out to be very important.”
— Kasey, age 17
“Bounced checks are horrible! It was good
to learn about that. I like the example with
the pizza. Thanks. It was great!”
— Lindsey,
age 20
“Thank
you for giving me encouragement to believe
in my dreams and for inspiring
me.”
— Laura,
age 17
How many credit card offers has your teen received?
It’s easier today for a young adult to
get a credit card than it is for you and me to
get one. Isn’t that amazing? Young adults
are getting into long-lasting trouble with credit
cards today. It’s never been easier for
them to get a card. The market for young adults
is very valuable. According to industry research,
young consumers remain loyal to their first cards
as they get older – so college undergraduates
receive an average of 8 credit card offers during
the first semester of school. And although these
cards may start out at 0% to 5% interest, within
3 months, most are charging 18% or more. (Have
one late payment, and interest rates sky-rocket
to 24.99% and up!)
There is no requirement for an income or credit
history to get a card. And parents don’t
have to co-sign.
There is also no class to teach them how to
use credit cards responsibly.
And, when asked, teens don’t know that
credit cards are “borrowed money.” They
think it’s “income.”
Let me share a few statistics
with you:
• More than
78% of undergraduates have an average of 3.5
credit cards with a balance of $2,748. Nearly
10% owe more than $7,000 on credit cards.
• More students
are leaving college now for financial reasons,
rather than for academic reasons.
• Nearly 7% of our nation’s
personal bankruptcies are filed by those under
the age of 25.
Consider
this: Young
adults ruin their credit ratings for 7 to 10
years because they don’t know how credit
cards work.
For example, let’s say 20-year-old
Joe charges $3,000 on a credit card that charges
18% interest. (Of course, he bought really important
stuff, like pizza, gas, a great pair of jeans,
a new stereo for his car, clothes for a girl
he dated for three weeks … You get the
idea …)
1. How long do you think it will
take Joe to pay off that $3,000 if he only pays
the minimum monthly payment?
a. 3 years
b. 10 years
c. 37½ years
~ Amazingly, it
will take Joe 37-1/2 years to pay off the original
$3,000!
2. Any idea how much interest he’ll
pay to borrow that $3,000?
a. $546
b. $4,283
c. $7,930
~ It will cost
Joe almost $8,000 to borrow $3,000! Great deal
for credit card companies. Not so great
for Joe.
Money Talks!
It’s
cheaper than the cost of one bounced check!
Money Talks! breaks
money into 7 simple
steps so
that everyone can learn the basics. If you don’t
learn what’s in this book, you’ll
never make it to the saving and investing part
of life. If you want to live your life, and you
want your teens to live their lives, not worrying
about money, you must learn the 7
simple steps in Money Talks! It’s
the foundation for your life … for your
teen’s life.
Research shows that if you learn
how to manage your money, you’ll be more
successful in other aspects of your life. You’re
likely to get better-paying jobs, become homeowners,
and plan for retirement. You’re also likely
to be healthier and happier.
Don’t you want all of that for
your teens?
• Teach
your teens about money.
• Because … money
talks.
• It
opens doors.
• It
offers opportunities.
• It
makes life easier.
And, for those who never learn
to manage their money, they’re likely to have lower productivity
at work, stay in low-paying jobs, and change
jobs quite often. They’re more likely to
live paycheck to paycheck. They’re more
likely to be renters, not homeowners. They’re
more likely to need government and community
assistance just to get by. And they’re
more likely to have high stress, both at work
and at home. Money is the number one cause of
divorce and domestic violence in the U.S. Is
this the life you wish for your teens?
If you’re finding that you’re
a bit defensive about the topic of money, let me
ask you this: When you were born, did you know
how to walk and talk? Read and write? Drive a
car? Balance a checkbook? Raise children? Dance,
sing, cook?
No.
You had to learn how to do all of these
things.
And,
you had to learn about money.
And,
you have to teach your teens about money.
It’s
that simple.
You have to learn
about money!
Did you know that …
… the financial decisions
your teens make today can impact them for years
to come?
… one bounced check for
a $7 pizza can cost $83 with service charges?
… $3,000 charged on a credit card at
18% interest with just minimum monthly payments
made will take 37½ years to pay off --
and cost $7,930 in interest?
… those payday/check-cashing
businesses popping up on every corner charge
up to 800% interest?
Here’s the good
news: Learning
about money is as easy as 1-2-3 !
Help your teens learn the 7
simple steps featured in Money Talks! and
they’ll be well on their way to having
financial independence. Learning about money
is crucial to living a happy, healthy, successful
life. And isn’t that what you ultimately
want for your teens?
Use Money Talks! as
a tool to teach your teens about money.
It
really is that simple.
• Money
Talks!
• It
opens doors.
