Is your teen ready for "the
real world?"
Take
the Moving Out Quiz
Dear Friend,
Nearly 4.5 million young adults will graduate this year … thinking
they have the answers they need to make it on their own in “the real
world.”
Statistics, however, show that’s
just not true. Young adults don’t know
how to do the simple things you and I take for
granted, like balancing a checkbook, finding
affordable car insurance, paying off credit cards,
interviewing for a job, applying for college,
or renting an apartment.
Most teens head out on their own
with a tight budget, a parental warning not to
overspend, and virtually no experience in paying
bills. Did you know that …
• The average college student
owes almost $20,000 in student loans — with
no guaranteed job upon graduation?
• More than 78% of undergraduates
have an average of 3.5 credit cards with a balance
of $2,748? Nearly 10% owe more than $7,000 on
credit cards.
• More students are leaving
college now because of financial reasons/debt,
rather than for academic reasons?
• Nearly 7% of our nation’s
personal bankruptcies are filed by those under
the age of 25?
• Young adults are using
payday/quick cash loan companies — borrowing
at up to 800% interest? Some are even signing
over the titles to their cars … and still
owing the bank when they lose the title.
• And that only 7 states
require personal finance to be taught in high
school?
• Less than 15% of high school students
ever attend a personal finance class.
So, who’s picking up the tab for the financial troubles these young
adults are getting into?
That’s right. You and I are …

Life was easier 20 years ago.
We didn’t have to worry about credit card
debt, cell phone roaming charges, debit cards,
Internet banking, identity theft, or credit reports.
While you and I learned life’s lessons
through the “school of hard knocks,” those
lessons are much harder today. So, what can you
do to help your teens become productive, responsible
citizens?
You can put the answers to life’s
questions at their fingertips …

How
many credit card offers
has your teen
received?
Young adults are getting
into so much trouble with credit cards
today. It’s never been easier to
get a card. The market for young adults
is very valuable. Industry research shows
that young consumers remain loyal to
their first cards as they get older.
College undergraduates receive an average
of eight credit card offers during the
first semester of school. And most of
the interest rates are 18% or higher.
(One late payment, and it sky-rockets
to 24.99%!)
There is no requirement
for an income or credit history to get
a card. And parents don’t have
to co-sign.
There is also no class
to teach them how to use credit cards
responsibly …
And, when asked, teens
don’t know that credit cards are “borrowed
money.” They think it’s “income.”
Again, let me repeat a
few statistics:
• More than 78% of
undergraduates have an average of 3.5
credit cards with a balance of $2,748.
Nearly 10% owe more than $7,000 on credit
cards.
• More students are
leaving college now because of financial
reasons/debt, rather than for academic
reasons.
• Nearly 7% of our
nation’s personal bankruptcies
are filed by those under the age of 25.
Consider this: Young adults
ruin their credit ratings for 7 to 10
years because they don’t know how
credit cards work.
For example, let’s
say 22-year-old Joe charges $3,000 on
a credit card that charges 18% interest.
(Of course, he bought really important
stuff, like pizza, gas, a great pair
of jeans, a new stereo for his car, clothes
for a girl he dated for three weeks … You
get the idea …)
1. How long do you think
it will take Joe to pay off that $3,000
if he only pays the minimum monthly payment?
a. 3 years?
b. 10 years?
c. 37-1/2 years?
Amazingly, it will
take Joe 37-1/2 years to pay off the
original $3,000!
2. Any idea how much interest
he’ll pay to borrow that $3,000?
a. $546?
b. $4,283?
c. $7,930?
The correct answer
is c. It will cost Joe almost $8,000
to borrow $3,000! Ouch!

Which would you rather
do: Pick up the tab when they get in
financial trouble — or teach them
how to handle their finances?
If you can count to three,
you can learn to manage your money! It
really is that easy! Funny that when
we’re born, we don’t know
how to walk, talk, eat, read, write,
etc. But, for some reason, many people
think we’re “just supposed
to know” finances? How is that?
Like everything else in life, we have
to learn …
Want to know the really
scary thing about credit cards? Young
adults are getting into so much financial
trouble, they’re getting bad grades,
dropping out of school, defaulting on
school loans, ruining their credit ratings
(And not just for 7 to 10 years … It
will follow them for a lifetime.), and
filing bankruptcies at record rates.
Even worse than that, though, is the
psychological impact of debt on today’s
youth. It can result in depression, substance
abuse, even suicide.
We have
to teach them how to handle money …
It’s no longer an option …

On My Own™ and
The Ultimate Bill Paying Tablet
